Film Review -- Year One (PG-13)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Directed by Harold Ramis
Released June 19, 2009

For all of you who read this that haven't seen the movie yet, congratulations! You've just saved yourself a bunch of money. This movie had about 8 laughs total. Jack Black plays the same exact character he's played in every other movie he has done and Michael Cera plays the same role he created on Arrested Development. Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt offer the only few bright spots in this movie, but their short roles aren't worth the admission. If you are a die hard Black or Cera fan then by all means rent this one. Otherwise save your money. In short Year One equals garbage!

Sorry to trash your "review" of "Year One" in response to your "critique" of "Transformers 2", oh no I lied, I am not sorry. I agree comments look good and this site lacks them, however some of your comments were off. You actually wrote more comments for my review than you did for your own review. That is cool.

As a part of any audience we need to have expectations. We usually know what we expect. Sometimes some people do not know what to be prepared for. When I saw "Pride and Prejeduce" I thought it was a documentry about Tupac Shakur.

When we see a comedy we are ready to laugh, and when we see an action flick we are ready for our jaws to drop. You should examine your expectations as you watch movies. This is the same feeling I get when I hear Ebert or Roper can a comedy or an action flick. I want to scream! Its an action movie! The writing is supposed to be cheesy! Or its a comedy its supposed to be stupid!

I NEVER said LeBouf or whatever his name is is a good actor or that the writers should move on the the next Scorsse film. I am only saying for what I wanted seeing the action film of the summer, I got it all. And if you read the review carefully, the only comparison I had to Godfather II is that both films were released two years after the original. Your response is similar response to what I got about my review of "Rambo 4"(which was a GREAT action movie and sequel) from an snobby French girl who had false expectations thinking they would recreate "First Blood".

In response to "Year One", your review makes me froth at the mouth thinking about seeing it! Although I rarley see comedies in the theatre for their lack of scecial effects...I really cannot wait to buy it bootlegged in Shanghai! I will understand that what I am watching is a COMEDY and I am sure that it will be goofy as all hell. When I do see an awful movie and decide to pan it I will be sure to write more than a paragraph and explain some
of my opinions. Please send comments of every movie you do not like so I can see it. Thanks!

I knew damn well that Year One is a comedy. When was the last time Jack Black did a serious role. And in the past I have loved most of his movies. At times he's even made me pee my pants a little, but this did not happen in Year One. It was a bad movie that was poorly written by a comedic genius, Harold Ramis. With all those elements I figured it would if anything be funny and it wasn't. I know it would be cheesy, it's Jack Black, DUH! It was not however funny. And I wasn't panning your review or you as person so save the attacks on me for another site. I was writing a rebutt because I was surprised anyone would rate Transformers 2 that high. Maybe you should take your own advice and read my comments carefully as well before you write your next diatribe.

One more point that I need to make is that I think you're defending Hollywood too much. We need to start having higher expectations again from the film industry. Right now Hollywood is stuck in a microwave mentality, where they are just re-heating old ideas that succeeded in the past and they lack serious originality. The problem is partly to blame on us the consumers because we keep rewarding them with our money so they don't learn their lesson. It's time we expect more. Who says the script in an action movie needs to be crap. Their are plenty of good action movies that have good stories and scripts, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Boondock Saints, First Blood, Terminator to just name a few. Doesn't mean those scripts are going to win an Academy Award, but at least the story and the plot are good and aren't just filler between action scenes like Transformers 2. That's all I'm saying. Did Transformers 2 deliver on action? Yes it did. I agreed with you on that. Did I expect greatness from it? No and to its credit, it wasn't great. Hollywood needs to pull its head out of its ass and start making some original movies instead of going through my childhood and ruining all my memories with crappy renditions of what was already done right the first time. They need to turn the microwave off and get in the kitchen and start cooking again otherwise they're going to continue to do poorly in this economy because people will stop going.

I absolutley agree with much of what you said in your second diatribe. Hollywood has been stuck in an awful place which lacks creativity and invests in primarily in safe projects like comics and remakes. However, to keep this high standard and apply it to all genres in film it is difficult. Everything evolves or devolves.

I am not saying that all actions movies are bound to have poor scripts. There are many which have excellent writing like Alien, True Romance, Die Hard, Leathal Weapon to name a few. I believe as we review films we need to always consider the target audience of demographic. Ask ourselves the question of weather we fit into thos groups. No longer are these action block busters rated R because they want a larger profit at the cost of the film.

We the consumers do not have the power to demand a higher quality of film to be produces in LA because we continue to go to the movies. It is a sad reality, but until hell freezes over we will be free of Bevery Hills Cop 4 (PG 13).
